Is it legal to mail firearms within the state without going through an ffl?

Within the state yes.
But youre supposed to fill out a form for the post office(I'm sure everyone does it). Long guns are ok. I think handguns arent kosher with the USPS.

Addressee: Officer of Army, Coast Guard, Air Force, Navy, Marine Corps, or Organized Reserve Corps.
Affidavit or Certificate Requirements: Mailable with affidavit signed by addressee and certificate signed by the commanding officer.

No, that's not the real answer, the original poster asked if it was legal, the legality of it doesn't depend on the person behind the counter.
Actually, that was my point. If the person behind the counter either isn't versed in the law or has some other vague reason for not shipping a firearm, it don't get shipped. Ask me how I know (with USPS, UPS and FedEx).
