Mortise locks?

Probably a dumb question, but are mortise locks the same size? Got an old lockset that uses a skeleton key...would like to swap to something more modern. Would a modern style one go right in or will that involve filling in the old and recutting for new?

not all mortise locks are the same size. Even doors made today for today’s mortise locks are prepped and fitted on site.

Not all the same size and the keyholes and knob holes are not all gonna line up the same

You might consider leaving the existing lock in place to use as a passage function and add a deadbolt above it for security?
