The French actor who played Corporal LeBeau on Hogan's Heroes has died.
He got a number tattooed on his arm when his family was sent to Nazi concentration camps; he was the only member to survive.

Wow, never knew he had the "tattoo", was one of my favorite shows way back and still watch on MEtv. Some pretty interesting charactors on that show, John Banner was lucky to get out, ended up in the USAAC and lost a lot of family in the camps also.

Mel Brooks was once asked why he portrayed Nazis in his films. He said making fun of them was the best revenge.

Hogan's Heros was Clary's revenge.

I love Hogan's Heroes and I still watch it. I never knew about Clary's tattoo or of John Banner's (I loved Shultz) history, but another interesting choice to star in the show was Werner Klemperer. Klemperer was a Jewish refugee who escaped Nazi Germany.

Sorta-kinda. His family emigrated to the US in 1933, and he served in the Army's Special Services unit (along with many other Hollywood types) during WWII.
