Hunting Sandhill Cranes is one of the best experiences I’ve had. I’m glad to share it with my son and some great friends.
There’s nothing like it, their vision is unbelievable and even the slightest mistake will send them away again to fight the winds! Laying under the grassy blind material you can see the eclipse of bird with the 6 foot wing span about to come down on your decoy set but you will hear the bugle & whistling calls of these birds all around you when they’re coming in low. That is probably my most memorable aspect of the hunt, the 360 degree sound pitched at you from these things from up in the sky.
When you lay up to finally give it to em, man...these big birds can take a hammerin. I really wish I had my tripod camera rolling to catch the big bird who folded up and fell from the sky right onto my legs! Brace for impact!!
