Grew up in Atchison, KS and every fall walking to school over a long viaduct there was Midwest Solvents below and on one side of the viaduct, where there were huge mountains of milo fermenting. Midwest Solvents used the milo in the process of making industrial alcohol solvents. The mountains of milo created a very sweet and pungent odor. I always associated that smell with fall; my favorite time of the year.

On side note: The same company that owned Midwest Solvents also owned McCormick Distillery in Weston, MO and would ship the mash from Atchison to Weston to make McCormick whisky and vodka.

After 41 years of smoking, working with Anhydrous Ammonia and Ethyl Mercaptin in my working life, I really don't have a sense of smell. Thus, I can say that I miss everything.

Well, once in a while I will get a whiff of something REALLY pungent, such as a dead skunk.
