The NRA is a 2nd Amendment organization...why would we expect them to expend funds and political capital on a non-2nd issue? Especially in terms of legislation that is not likely to pass anyway.

Twisting it to suggest that the NRA is against free speech is misleading.

Because the people that support the NRA ans the 2nd also support the whole Bill of Rights.

You guys are starting to make me laugh. The NRA has a sworn duty to protect any and all of our rights? What have you been smoking?

Yes, the people that support the NRA and the 2nd amendment also support the whole Bill of Rights. That doesn't make it a requirement that the NRA does. Find another organization for that. The NRA is about the 2nd amendment. Trying to make them your savior for any thing you feel is against the bill of rights is misguided effort.

The NRA has sold the Second Amendment out time and again for 70 years. Why would ANYBODY expect them to hold fast to a Constitutional issue, anyway ?

Folks...you better start taking a HARD look at those defending the NRA and their wholesale sell outs over the years...for you are looking at gun controllers masquerading as Gun Rights supporters.
In other words..they are shooting you in the back as you look out your foxhole...

Because the people that support the NRA ans the 2nd also support the whole Bill of Rights.

And those people are free to support other lobby groups that take up 1st Amendment issues.

Nobody here has articulated a valid reason for a 2nd Amendment organization to expend resources on this legislation...legislation that the largest 2nd Amendment group in the world is exempt from. Resources are limited, pick your battles.

"Gun Owners of America has been one of the key players in opposing the DISCLOSE Act." -- Rep. Paul Broun (R-GA)

Friday, June 18, 2010

Thank you all for your hard work. The DISCLOSE Act is on the ropes!

Here's what The Washington Post reported this morning:
One of President Obama's top legislative priorities is in serious doubt after top House Democrats' attempt to satisfy the National Rifle Association backfired badly.
The Post says that "top Democrats abandoned plans for a Friday vote in the House" on the DISCLOSE Act after several Representatives and organizations "rose up against the deal with the NRA."

Interestingly, the Post also reported that the intended beneficiaries of the deal -- that is, the Blue Dog Democrats who were expected to drop their opposition to the DISCLOSE Act once the NRA dropped theirs -- were still "spooked" by public resistance to the bill.

You can pat yourselves on the back knowing that you were a huge part of the outpouring of opposition that was generated this week. You played a big role in "spooking" the politicians who are going to be soliciting your votes in November.

You should know that the sponsors of the bill are still looking for ways to resuscitate the legislation, so GOA will continue to keep you abreast of further developments.

But for now, enjoy the victory and have a great weekend!

NRA Letter... dated May 26...

http://www.nraila.org/Legislation/Federal/Read.aspx?id=5888

So the NRA was actively pouring resources into opposing this bill... then they got their exemption and went neutral. To me, that is effectively supporting the restriction of free political speech. (And, before you say it, if they had supported it in the beginning and shifted to neutral, that would have been taking an effective opposition to it, in my opinion.)

Any comment on the opinion of the dissenting board member quoted above? Is she just a paranoid fly in the ointment?
