I told my father about the "25 mission" rule and he said BS at 25 missions my father's mission became classified. He flew 52 before they decided he had enough.
I just visited the National Museum of the USAF yesterday where the Memphis Belle is preserved & story is told. One thing I learned was another B-17 hit the mark a few days before the MB but continued flying missions. Never could figure out why from the display materials.
The Memphis bell was once stored at Altus AFB

Not just the Belle, Altus was a B-17 graveyard. It was only by chance an airman recognized it while they were stripping and reclaiming them.
