It's just simple leverage.
chain to the bottom of whatever you're pulling, drape over tire, pull with vehicle.

Interesting, wonder if a snatch strap would be safer than a tow strap.

lay a blanket over chain so if it comes loose or breaks in will drop to ground instead of thru window. Old four wheeling trick for winches.
