Serpas have seen some improvement. The main reason they are banned by many instructors is because people were shooting themselves due to not understanding how the release worked and finger fracking the trigger on their draw. This was a problem with the originals as they had a piece that made the release more recessed and forced people with long fingers to curl their finger instead of laying it flat. The new Serpas don't have the recess feature anymore and allow you to lay your finger flat no matter your finger length. The grit in the release problem has supposedly been corrected as well. The grit problem can happen with any mechanical holsters however including the GCode or Safariland strap designs.
