Ol lady needs some protection and I need advice!

At risk of incurring the wrath of BB and probably a few others I just can't help but say...

.357 is a pretty stout cartridge in a full size 5" bbl S&W 686 like mine. It's even stouter firing it out of a 3" revolver. Not pleasant and not something I for one would put into the hands of the untrained, to be fired in a stressful situation, especially a woman (ducks for cover). Heck, I don't like it and I'm 230 lbs with big ole fat hands that can fire 40 S&W and 45 ACP all day long without missing a lick. Even my .44 Mag with 6" bbl and rubber grips is more pleasant to fire than a 3" bbl .357 with hard rubber grips.

Of course she could fire .38's out of it but depending on the lady in question even .38's out of a 3" revolver can be unpleasant.

Actually, in spirit, I agree with everything you have posted. Women tend to be less confident in their abilities because they don't practice as much as men do overall. Back before I hurt my neck I would stand toe to toe with you and fire any caliber of weapon you cared to play with all day long ... BUT ... that was after GC worked a long, long time with me. You cannot know how many times we went to the range and I was ready to leave after only one or two magazines through a couple of guns ...

With the wide array of firearms at our disposal in this day and time there is not reason why any woman cannot find a gun she is comfortable with and can learn how to shoot proficient. Drawing, aiming and firing under stress is a completely different animal though. EVERYONE (not just women) need to get specialized training as often as they can and practice regularly because drawing your weapon under the stress of an ongoing incident is NOTHING like drawing your gun at the range (or even playing around in competitions, although I can say that shooting in competitions has made me much more confident in my abilities to handle a gun under stress).

It is better to carry something than nothing . So, if you can not get her what she wants you have a couple of options. Those are save up the money and let her carry something you already have or get something you can afford that may or may not be changed out later.

There is nothing wrong with a 380 especially if you are thinking 38spc.

Taurus/S&W .357/.38 Spl.......I wouldn't be too worried about it being uncomfortable to shoot. In the heat of the moment she won't feel it nor hear the shot.....

I agree with the thoughts already mentioned about letting her choose what she is most comfortable with. I also think that $400 is plenty of money to open up a huge array of reliable choices and the idea that funerals cost more is absurd at best.

What's absurd is the OP placing a price on his Ole Lady's life of $400. Since he made that the limit of what he was willing to pay for her safety I simply asked what would cost him more a funeral or a gun that might run more than $400. In other words if the only gun he could afford would cost him $500 would he just forgo that option. If his Ole Lady really needs to be able to protect herself its either spend the money on prevention or end up spending it on a funeral.

What is truly absurd is to place a value on someone you love's life. If he was serious about her and her personal protection it wouldn't matter what it cost. He'd figure out a way to get her the weapons and/or training she needed to be safe or at the very least teach her how to avoid potentially dangerous places and situations in the first place.

Otherwise why even bring it up?

And while the subject of absurdity has been broached there was no mention of any training in using a firearm as a self defense tool. There were strong indications/implications in the OP that the woman has had none or little firearms training let alone using it for self defense.

Guns are not magic talismans that provide a shield of invulnerabilty; in fact in the hands of the untrained the exact opposite can be true as they may place themselves in situations they would otherwise avoid simply because they have a gun.

The whole tenor of the OP's message was quite disturbing to me and I felt it needed to be addressed (along with the term Ole Lady which is a particularly abhorent way to refer to a loved one IMO and another reason for my response) .

sweet...i recommended this to a really good friend's lady that does not own and only has once shot a pistol. i'm glad to see that you did not go the pepper/taser route....guns trump all that....

the taurus 9mm was a good deal, so was the diamondback .380 ... any of these would be better than pepper spray .....heck the 100.00 remington .22 would work.

I think you should keep your mouth shut honestly because you dont know what my lifes like OR the situation i'm in. IF i could spend more I would, this isn't a question about how much im WILLING to spend d*** head but how much I can. Being a college student I'm not going to lose my apartment or have my utilities cut and get a few hundred dollars even more behind over something that when you point and click it goes bang. She means the world to me but there isnt anything i can do at the moment besides do what I can and get an upgrade later. Keep your dickish comments to your self. She's gonna need it with the likes of you placing something that you point and click that goes bang in her hands when she gets in a situation she never should have been in using a tool she has no experience or training on how to use all under the stress of life threatening fear.

You don't get it; probably never will. Hopefully you and yours will never meet Mr. Darwin. Personally I wouldn't take that bet.
