Hey everybody I've never started a thread or whatever but I could use some help. I have always had problems with rls but lately I just don't sleep much anymore . Does anybody have these sleep problems or any advice on changing life habits. My first step is giving up caffeine and more exercise. Has anyone done a sleep study and if so did you get help. Thanks for any advice, I don't have insurance at the time and anyone out there that's has some helpful advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Had a sleep study several years ago and found out I have severe sleep apnea and RLS. I ended up with a CPAP and take a pill for RLS called Mirapex. I put that CPAP on at night and it's now total and restful la-la land. It's not hard to wear at al IMO and it lets me BREATHE rather then choke and gasp for air all night. Might be costly without decent health insurance though...adfvice for now: Elevate the head of your bed three or four inches. Sleep on your side or stomach not your back. Avoid alocohol. Stop smoking. Good luck.

I had the sleep study done about 2 yrs ago after telling my doc that I woke up every morning tired. He suspected sleep apnea.
Turns out that the sleep study showed that I kicked one or both of my legs 43 times per hour meaning I never got into a deep sleep. Diagnosis was "periodic limb movement disorder". They put me on Mirapex and it has worked wonders. My wife actually thought I died the first night I took it.
You might ask your doc if he will let you try it since you don't have insurance to cover a sleep study. Bye the way, there is now a generic for Mirapex, much cheaper. Good luck.

Druryj, how in HELL do you sleep with that mask on? I have, apparently, very severe apnea and the pressure of the air blowing in my face is awful! I can't take it for more than just a few minutes.

For RLS, by the way, Mirapex is a life saver. Without it, sleep is not possible.

I pretend I'm Darth Vader with the mask. It's gotten to where I put that sucker on and it's off to nitey-nite for me!

The generic is Prameximole or Pramexipole...works just as good!

Put a bar of soap under your sheet at the end of the bed...
There are some kinds of tonic water that has quinine in it....drink one before you go to bed
There are over the counter meds for rls....about as good as you get without a Rx
.
Place a small fan on your night stand if you cant wear the cpap...it helps some
You can also get a tube type mask thats not darth vader like...Good Luck

I've had RLS. But I started taking vitamins/suppliments and haven't had it since. I take Centrum multi purpose, fish oil capsule, Glucosimine Condroitin, 500 mg Calcium, a baby aspirin, two vitamin C tablets, and a B complex.

These are what my wife (who is also my medical provider) recommends I take for general health, but I've noticed that I don't have the "shakey leg" any more.
