. . . because only about 100 movies in their fairly large movie library are captioned, and only a few of their TV series have captions.

Come this September looks like the ADA can bite 'em in the butt and I hope it does.

I consider this short sighted and mean.

If you are considering signing up with Prime and you need captions, I suggest you don't.

If you don't like the products they sell, that's fine -- take your business elsewhere and warn others about them. But cheering for the government to come along and crack down on them is not cool. It is great that captioning technology exists, but it would be completely unjust to force people to provide it against their will, and to take the uncaptioned option away from those of us who don't want it. I buy plenty of movies and shows through Prime, and appreciate any savings that come from the omission of an option I never use anyway.

As usual, we don't agree. I'll cheer if I want to, and you can say it's not cool if you want to. How great to have a country where we can do that.

My main problem with Prime is that their sales pitch hid the captioning issue very skillfully. There is some info on the net that shows they did it, and are now doubletalking the complainants about how this is all a surprise to them, and they are trying to fix the problem (with no evident progress).

I'll stay with them for the reasons farmerbyron gave, but was very disappointed with their deceptive approach to the captioning issue.

As for wanting the government to crack down, the law is the law, whether you like it or not. Or are you simply suggesting defiance of the law?

I've been meaning to say this for a while, but it isn't that we so often disagree, it's that you seem to go out of your way to be disagreeable. If that's fun for you, have at it.

The fact that we are free to state our opinions is one reason this country is great. The fact that we can force them on one another through the power of the state is one reason it will not be great for long.

If Amazon actually misled consumers into thinking they offered captioning when they did not, that violated the rights of their customers, and they should be forced to make it right if they won't do it themselves. But you don't need ADA for that... good old fashioned fraud and breach of contract principles work just fine. But if your complaint is that they supposedly discriminated against deaf folks by not offering captioning, and you want the government to come force them to do so, that is a completely different story.

As far as the law goes, there is no correlation between legality and morality. I think it is immoral to applaud the initiation of force against people who aren't infringing on anyone else's rights, regardless of the legal status of the action.

Being disagreeable isnt my motive. It's just that somebody has to stand up for free markets and individual rights on his forum... and there seem to be a lot of very opinionated folks on here who disagree with those values.

First of all - Netflix has tons of captioning and would probably be a better solution.

I'm not very familiar with Amazon Prime, though those I know who have it simply get it for the shipping savings.

However, I'm going to also agree with not cheering for .gov intervention here. I don't see why I should have to subsidize a service I don't use and feel that way about most of the ADA. I'm surprised to see such an outpouring of support for socialism here on OSA.

Maybe you should just be ashamed the .gov is less selfish than you. You won't be young forever. God forbid the day you actually benefit from provisions of the ADA.

So what are you list of socialist programs you like? Just the ADA? Or just the ones you benefit from?

My apologies for being a real fiscal conservative.
