He's also mistaking cause for effect on the origin of "Leatherneck"--the Marines wore the leather stocks because they were part of the uniform (the British Marines also wore leather stocks at the time, as did enlisted men in the British Army); the protection against swords was a side benefit.As the son of a Marine, I have to question only one assertion in that article. The US Marine Corps predates the United States itself, having been formed on November 10th, 1775, so his referring to the Marines as "newly created" in 1801 is inaccurate. Otherwise, an eye-opening article.
