"Red herring is a kind of fallacy that is an irrelevant topic introduced in an argument to divert the attention of listeners or readers from the original issue."

Not trying to distract at all. Lets tease out what is being discussed. We are being asked to believe that a county clerk (the job, not the person) should be able to pick and choose which items he or she (the person) feels would go against their personal religious beliefs. That even this person's signature on a document would constitute an religious violation.

If that is the true then where would it end? Would a morman clerk be allowed to refuse to issue any document that would allow a restaurant or bar to serve alcohol? What about a simple coffee shop? How about a Christian clerk refusing needed documents to open a jewish synagogue (they did kill Jesus, after all)? How supportive would this lady have been of a catholic clerk refusing to file any papers relating to a divorce?

People in her county would be held hostage to her personal interpretation of her personal religion.

The original issue being forced to do something contrary to her religious beliefs, how exactly is that analogy a red herring?

analogy

noun, plural analogies.
1.
a similarity between like features of two things, on which a comparison may be based:
the analogy between the heart and a pump.

2.
similarity or comparability:
I see no analogy between your problem and mine.
3.
Biology. an analogous relationship.
4.
Linguistics.
the process by which words or phrases are created or re-formed according to existing patterns in the language, as when shoon was re-formed as shoes, when -ize is added to nouns like winter to form verbs, or when a child says foots for feet.
a form resulting from such a process.
5.
Logic. a form of reasoning in which one thing is inferred to be similar to another thing in a certain respect, on the basis of the known similarity between the things in other respects

Obama picking and choosing which laws should be enforced trumps (pardon the pun) all y'all's examples because it is real not hypothetical.

When the chief law enforcement officer of the nation, an elected official, openly flaunts laws is it surprising that other officials follow in his footsteps?

So the answer is to be no better than Obama?

I agree that she should probably bow out gracefully through a resignation and I am a Christian.

What I am shocked about is the outright indignation towards those of faith In this thread. Maybe I shouldn't be, but I thought Okies would be better than some of this crap that has been said. Some of you should be disappointed in your writings, but you won't have the faith, conviction or the proper upbringing to even realize it.

I am thankful though. This thread has really opened my eyes which were apparently somewhat closed before.

Perhaps we should stick to the 'S' portion of OSA?

Sad, isn't it?

What are you shocked by? Please give specific examples (post numbers would work just as well as quotes)

This morning the judge said he would release Davis if she simply agreed to not interfere with the clerks issuing licenses. She would not agree. Hope she enjoys jail grub.

i think you missed the main point of the arguments that are presented in this tread. No one was attacking people of faith. We are defending the principles that this country was founded on, escape of religious persecution. No one said that she cannot have faith or believe that homosexuality is wrong. We are saying that the religious believes of a government official has no business directing the lives of private people.
Private people can exclude other private people all they want. I get the feeling you are one of those excluders. If a person doesn't share your faith or opinion about faith, well then they didn't have "proper upbringing". those are your words, you are personally attacking those that do not share your opinion about faith or whatever.

Exclusion at its finest. not really a very christian thing to do, is it?

You're going to have to post specific examples of this indignation towards those of faith, because all I've seen is a lack of understanding. :anyone:

I for one have no concern if she suffers greatly, she is intentionally and maliciously tormenting others. Sometimes we call people like that "evil" or "monsters", in her case we call her a Christian.

Here's one I grabbed quickly.

Actually this kind of protest has been going on as long as there has been a country and it usually results in a minor change to the law. It is only because she is doing it to uphold the County Clerk's religious beliefs that some have their knickers in a wad.

Fixed it for ya. :(
