Got rid of my $185 a month cable bill and bought 2 Amazon fire boxes, between Netflix, prime, kodi and PlayStation vue I'm happy. I'm down to $100 a month so that bonus $80 is nice. I tried sling tv and did not like it but I do like the PlayStation vue streaming.

I would love to ditch Directv but I first need a reliable and affordable internet service. Atlink is the only rural service I'm aware of and the reviews so far have been iffy.

Bumping this thread because Cox continues to raise prices. I've been a customer for almost 30 years and they refused to work with me so they gone. I had tv, phone, and internet was never paying more than $200 per month. 2 months ago they had a price increase and my bill was $210 per month. Got this months bill and it went up to $248 per month.:cry3: Naturally I called and demanded the same price I was paying even accepting the last reasonable increase. Got transferred to their loyalty department and they told me they could give me a great price of $239 per month.:igetit: So I dumped them right then and went to best buy and bought mohu antennas and fire sticks. Already have netflix but added direct tv now. Its a no contract streaming service for $50 per month with 40 channels including Hbo and Espn's. Should have done this a while back.

Trust me, you're not alone. I work for Cox, going on my 18th year with them. The biggest drive for price hikes are the broadcasters. Right now there are only 7-10 (can't remember with all the mergers now) broadcasters who control all the channels. The average price hike when they renegotiate their contracts is 300%. The providers have no choice but to hike prices, especially with the fast pace advancement of technology. When you look at their costs for business if they kept their prices level for more than 2 years they would go into the red.

If I didn't work for them I wouldn't have pay tv service. Especially with over 55 channels available OTA and the plethora of streaming choices available. Pretty soon this will force the broadcasters to lower their prices, that or they will jack up the prices for streaming. So enjoy the cheap streaming while you can, because you know the broadcasters won't lower their prices.

Yeah, like when you could have gotten 60+ channels for $40. That package (Live a Little) has gone up to $50 but I'm grandfathered in and, as long as I change nothing, I get to keep my 60+ channels (until AT&T decides to change the rules again.) ESPN is included but not HBO--but I couldn't care any less about HBO.

I have to Hbo at least until season 8 of Game of Thrones is over.

I have Directvnow and have the 2nd from the top plan at $40. It’s a price I’ll never get back if I make any changes. It suits me for now as i can add Netflix if I want. Don’t have that but they are taking over with all the good shows.

Not to resurrect another ancient thread, but after ditching cable a while ago, I've realized I really only use my internet for streaming TV and connecting my phone to the web off network.

I've learned that there is nothing interesting on TV, the antenna is good enough, and my unlimited phone data has a high enough cap, I won't need it. Today I cut internet to the house. Never thought I'd see the day. No cable, no web, and about a million projects I can't get distracted from anymore.

It feels right Brian... It just feels right.

You got any youngish kids in the house?

I envy you but with a 9- and 10- year old, I'm still married to wired internet for now. No phone, no cable TV, only a few streaming options (netflix and the Espn+/Hulu/DisneyPlus bundle) but not even a streaming TV package anymore.

Everything I like I can get by watching on Youtube (not TV, just plain youtube) or OTA television.
