When seeing someone like that you have to decide if he is looking for fame by "exposing" overreacting cops or by being the next mass shooter. Which one will he be? Do you know right off the bat?
It appears I'm about 16yrs your junior. I carried a rifle in the back window of my truck to school. The guy doesn't scare me. However, he makes lots of the voting public nervous. You are right that times have changed. How do we fix it? I'm pretty sure this "auditor" thing isn't gonna work.
I support 1st and 4th Amendment Auditors because it shows the arrogance and ignorance of some LEO's when it comes to Constitutional rights of citizens. It amazes me how often police will disregard your rights and put their ego above the law. That being said, the open carry people that want to "educate" LEO's and other citizens are usually doing it out of the spectrum of good common sense. As responsible gun owners we should encourage the education of people without scaring the crap out of them. The boy was trying to prove a point, but in doing so he put fear into other people regarding their safety. Bad move.....crap way of doing it and did nothing to improve the perception of 2nd Amendment protection.
Honestly, going around with the purpose of eliciting a response from LEO's just to film their reaction should be punishable just as prank calling 911. Its one thing to be doing something else and have an ignorant or idiotic LEO try to infringe on your rights. Its something else when you load yourself down with enough firepower to make John Wick even blink and do this just to get the cops to come out and film them. This is the "cry wolf" behavior that does nothing to bring awareness to the 2nd amendment. Someday an active shooter might be spotted before he starts shooting and the police officers, even though notified, might not respond as quickly because they think its another of these idiots doing a so called "audit".
This behavior is stupid, asinine, counter-productive and should not be encouraged or washed under the rug because you carried a hunting rifle back in the day. Guess what, I bet if you walked around with a hunting rifle no one would say much still to this day. This is completely different.

I like to say that if you wear the uniform people will assume you're one of them.
In this case the jackass wore the uniform of an "active shooter", so people assume that's what he is, and I don't blame them.

Yes I carried that rifle in the back window also when I got my first truck. To school even where it remained in the back window until I wanted to drive to the country and shoot a rabbit or a target. The only way to make it common place again is, to make it commonly exercised. I think...
The only time I got questioned by the law one night leaving my girlfriends house, got pulled over, and he looked in the window at the rifle and said, "we had a report of someone in this area driving around waving a gun out the car window, was that you"? I said no sire, that rifle hasnt moved since last (whenever) when I was target practicing, it hasnt been touched since".
He asked if it was loaded and I said yes sire, and he said have a nice night, and walk away. Never checked any ID, just asked a few simple questions.
It was also common place for LEOs to have a better attitude and no chip on their shoulder.
