Anyway, we were at the observatory at our very own private Star Party until about 1:00 with one of the trained guys on the super telescope they have. We saw a beautiful night sky then looked at a binary star in the handle of the Big Dipper, a cluster galaxy, the Whirlpool Galaxy, Antares, Vega, Jupiter (you could see the bands of gas even) and several others. It was very cool. Now off in search of morning chow.

Very cool. The binary star in the handle of the Big Dipper is Alcor/Mizar. In clear enough skies and with good enough eyesight, you can actually split those with your naked eye. My eyesight isn't quite that good, but when I look at them I can definitely tell there's something different about them even if I can't fully split them.

Stars can be pretty to look at through telescopes (Antares, Vega) but in my opinion the most interesting things are the galaxies, globular clusters and nebulae. Other than different colors, stars all tend to look just like points of light. In my opinion, no galaxy or nebulae looks exactly the same. Globular clusters are also pretty remarkable to look at. Some of the oldest objects in the universe with literally THOUSANDS of stars packed into a very very small region of space.

Enjoy your time!

Our astronomy guy at the observatory told us that the two binary in the BD handle were named by ancient Arabs who used it as a test of eyesight. Whatever, it is pretty cool. One of the galaxies we looked at is estimated to have over 500,000 stars, but I didn’t count them so I can’t really say.

I bet he meant 500 Million stars in that galaxy. The Milky Way (our own galaxy) is estimated to have between 100-400 BILLION stars, and we are a medium size galaxy as galaxies go. Some of the globular clusters I mentioned can have 50,000 stars in them alone.

The Andromeda galaxy is estimated to have 1 TRILLION stars. The size of the universe cannot be fully appreciated by the human mind.

We went to Westcliffe in March. Piedmont to Westcliffe in just over 8 hours driving. "Spice and Sugar" bakery was really really good. We also ate at Chappy's. It was decent. The menu was a little limited because the fryer was down. My son said it's always down. My son says there are one or two good places to eat in the sister town as well (Silver Cliff).

Had a burger at Chappy’s today and it was decent. Then we. got a bunch of sweets to take out at Sugar and Spice. In fact, I believe I’ll go eat some kind of muffin or something from them right now.

Pagosa Springs is a vacation in itself. We stayed at an RV park northwest of Pagosa Springs in 2009 for two weeks and did day trips all over that part of Colorado, including a day at Mesa Verde and another day for the Durango/Silverton Railroad.
Be spending two weeks in Pagosa springs this summer at river side RV resort.

It’s pretty country out here but the beef isn’t as good as ours. The cows we’ve seen are smaller, the better cuts of meat at meat markets wouldn’t cut back in Oklahoma. But then, we also don’t have some of the cool things they have here. Snow in the close background in June is purty cool.
