Well, when everyone is offended by everything, nobody wants to lend a helping hand because it may "offend" the person you're trying to help because they see it as you're treating them as disabled.

Funny story (Or sad)...

I was in NYC on a business trip. Entering the office in the morning I look back and see a woman coming to the door so without thinking I hold the door open for her. She pulls up short, glares at me and proceeds to tell me what a pig I am to assume she was too frail to open the &^$#&^% door for herself.

Caught completely off guard I must have looked like the cat that ate the canary but I typically recover fairly quickly. In my best back woods Okie accent I looked her in the eye and said..."Well, ma'am, I had to upset someone this morning. Mama said you hold the door for a lady and she'd be upset if I didn't so I could either upset mama or I could upset you...Mama can still whoop my ass so you lose." I continued holding the door for her (and the 3 other women behind her by this point). The others thanked me and the second one through muttered "What a *****!" after thanking me for holding the door.

Sometime you just have to have fun with it.

Anybody who knows me knows exactly how old school I am.

I still open doors for women whether they like it or not.
I still call women ma'am and men sir.
I still give my seat to a woman when all seats are taken.
I still take off my hat/cap whenever I enter a dwelling (other than Walmart, grocery store, etc.).
I definitely take off my hat/cap at the table...even when dining out. You'd be surprised at the men (even OLD men) who fail to do this.
I still tell folks have a nice day when departing.
I still say please and thank you.
I still walk past complete and total strangers, give them that 'I acknowledge you' nod and usually say something like, "how ya doing?"

And my biggest pet peeve, schtick, thang, whatever you wanna call it...I still approach a vet (both retired and active duty) offer a handshake and thank them for their service and for providing the blanket of freedom that my family and I rest under. :patriot:

All they have to do is say “no” or “get away” and then they can handle the problem themselves.
