I don't want to muddy the waters, but sometimes a general practice doctor will biopsy a growth that a dermatologist will tell you there's nothing to worry about. They do it just to be safe.

A dermatologist did it and is the one that said it is a melanoma.

My wife had some cut off several years ago, and has had no more issues, but she is heavy with the sunscreen now and generally stays out of the sun. She was a prime candidate. Used to spend time in those tanning booths when younger, then spent a lot of time in the sun with me fishing, etc.
Those tanning booths were found to make one more susceptible to melanoma after using them we read.

No tanning booths but she is a redhead.

I had carcinoma on my nose 6 months months ago and had Mohs surgery to remove it. Had about 8 stiches as it was pretty deep. Now I have have to wear hats a sunscreen all the time and go back every 6 months for check ups.

I dunno, but I think there's a very wide range of prognosis for melanoma. I don't see how anyone not familiar with her specific case can guess what you should expect. I would ask questions of her dermatologist, and if you're still not sure I'd consider getting a second opinion. It's almost like saying my car is making a noise, will it be expensive to fix it?

I had a good size melanoma beside my nose and had it removed at Mohs a couple of months ago. Can't even see the scar. Highly recommend Dr. Rhinehardt.

Not expecting to know exactly what she will go thru, just hoping for an overall response from people that have had it without to much in the way of problems. In other words, she is scared and I want to reassure her with some "So and so had it and is doing fine."

Anyone who has spent a lot of time in the sun should get checked periodically. Several years ago I had a spot on my nose. It turned out to be basil cell carcinoma and I ended up having a piece from my ear grafted to my nose. It’s nothing to sneeze at, pun intended.

Another one of the "joys" of aging. Modern medicine is at once marvelous and vexing. We start collecting new doctors.
Prayers and best wishes for healing.
