Yep
Full service gas stations were the norm until the oil embargo following the 73 war.
Then gas became scarce, expensive, and they took off the little lever on the gas pump handle that filled the tank full.
All of a sudden people pumped their own gas and cleaned their own windshields and a million jobs went poof, just like that!

In the state of New Jersey it's against the law to pump your own gas. The jobs still exist but the service...not so much. DOn't wash the windows and they'll get to you when they get to you. They know you can't DIY so...

I can remember meeting my Mom for supper when she worked shift work at Lipton Tea in Suffolk, Va. My stepdad would stop at Rich's fast food joint and we would all get burgers or hot dogs. I remember the hot dogs were .15 cents each.

Somewhere I have an old menu from either the Wide-Awake or the Around The Corner cafe here in Edmond. I can not remember the year but I think it was 1950s. The prices were amazingly low compared to what we pay today. If I remember correctly a T-bone with all the fixins was around $1.

I have not heard the name Wide-Awake cafe in a very long time. When I had summer break from school, Grandpa used to take me to breakfast and lunch there in the late 60's before and there was a bus station close to it I believe. When they closed he started going to the Around the Corner Cafe.Brought back some Great memories.
