It's a great concept. You don't have that fancy roofline that does nothing but create esoterics. What you do have is a place to store everything right outside the barn door side while not cluttering up the interior of the living space. The roof never needs replaced, the siding never needs replaced. The roof of the living area is not exposed to the sun making utilities cheap.
We will never leave where we live now, but if it were an option back in the day, this is the way we would go.

I definitely like this idea if/when we ever get some land. I'm not sure I could convince the wife to forego a 'traditional' home, but having a giant attached shop and garage area would be awesome to me. Could even partition parts of it and would be easier to heat/cool sections, have a paint room, etc. I'd want to make sure it was solid construction all the way around, but man... I could definitely live in a setting like that.

Where ya moving to?

I build a few in the Blanchard/TriCity area.

$140-$150 builder cost would be a really well appointed home.

Prices have gone up, and inventory is low, but you can probably buy something on a city lot for around that price.

Obviously, if you own the land, the price per square foot will be lower.

edit for a shameless plug -

This is the last one I built.

Nice! Is that a $150/sq.ft. home? I didn't do the math.[emoji16]

I really miss building new homes but I'm way to slow these days to do it myself and way to cranky to deal with subcontractors.

I agree with @dennishoddy if your going to live on an acreage check out a metal home. I have an acquaintance that has one that is absolutely beautiful. The outside looks like two attached metal buildings that are two tone. The inside is completely custom. Low maintenance nice full covered porches and his garage is 3 cars wide and 2 cars deep and he has a shop on the end of it. The kitchen is an open floor plan I would guess the kitchen is 60-80k. If I had the coin and the property I would love a metal building home.

Depends if you want a stick built/steel frame built.
As a Suggestion only. A lot of folks building in rural areas right now(I think I remember you saying your were wanting to build rural?)are building Metal building barns with homes built on one end of the barn. A friend of ours did that. They have a beautiful interior with custom built everything cabinets, the best flooring, etc.
Walk out the side door into the barn and you have all the storage and space for tractors, implements, mowing equipment and so on to maintain the property. Edit: walk out the other door and your near the hot tub, big front lawn with swings, shade, BBQ cooking area, etc.
I know you have your plan in place, but just wanted to present an alternative that is pretty popular out here.

Do you have any pics or zillow links to examples? For years I've told myself my next home in OK will be steel framed with metal roof.

The seven most terrifying words in the English language: "Hi, we just moved here from California!"

The OP deserves some slack in this case. He is moving here to help keep things red, but not sure we'll have enough Starbucks and kale to satiate his appetite. LOL. Just kidding.
