The way you talk you're a decrepit old fart with one foot in the grave and the other on a banana peel. When, if ever are you going deer hunting? Just buy a Promag S&W 59 drum for your Marlin and call it good!.
I do have several health issues and the docs nag me as bad as my wife about don't do this, don't do that, but I am still trying to do what I can. I am also a little bit of a prepper so I like to be as prepared as I can be. I may never get to go hunting, but if things change or the SHTF, I want the option. Same as defending my home. I doubt anything comes up I can not handle with one of the 3 pistols I have within reach, but I want the option.

Problem is to many people here are doing what they always do and really not paying attention to what I am saying, and are pushing what they like and getting a little miffed because I am not falling in line. I do not like the AR platform, I do not trust it. I pretty much prefer anything to it. I would rather keep my Camp 9 before owning an AR. I feel the Mini 14 or M-1 carbine are better for MY needs. You mileage may vary.

It dawn's on me that old Ted and I can say anything we want about winning this and that. Here is one of several of Jim Scouten's shooting shows that features me at the Ft Benning 3-Gun match. I am very tricky, my screen name is KurtM....which is how I hide my real identity of Kurt Miller....Ted?? Well not so much, but hey Ted let's see proof of your "Mini" prowess.

You win, Kurt. I already conceded your skill and knowledge.

Not having much luck trading for a Mini 14 as everyone "Just traded mine"

I am wanting a rifle that can be used for defense or hunting if needed. Does not kick to hard because of my rib and sternum issues, and is not a tacticool plastic wonder. Not a fan of 223 / 5.56 but admit it may be the best choice for my needs as I do not think 30 cal carbine is a good choice for hunting.

Any ideas or recommendations? Remember if I can not trade for it, I can not afford it.

I'm a big proponent of the Mini 30. One of my all time favorite rifles.

But Rick, the AR is SO much better, you need to learn to like it like everyone else does. Just try it, you'll see ......

and the stripper really likes you!

I do not care much for the AR15 platform either but it is because the stock does not drop like a bolt rifle.
So the sights I use which is a scope must be set up kind of high above the barrel to get good eye placement.
Most stocks are very short also.

But it is supposed to be kind of compact.
I have 4 of them though but really prefer my bolt action .223.
I am pretty quick with the bolt action when it comes to hunting.

I get my brass back also instead of the rifle tossing it 4 or 8 foot away into the tall grass.

If I want the hunt all terrain and that includes long distances 400+ yards i do not take my AR I take a bolt rifle.
I do love a short barrel though.. very accurate in different temps and accuracy node is much wider in a short barrel.

I can go all Swampratt and carve the stock and handguard from scrap lumber.

And that was not scrap lumber it was a tree I cut down in my back yard so lets call it a stump.
Carved the stock and grip from a stump using a chainsaw and angle grinder.

I agree about the stock on the AR, one of the things that felt off to me. I had a hard time getting comfortable firging one and never did feel like I had a proper cheek weld. I don't know, maybe if there was an AR stock that felt right I could live with it, but I doubt it.

That is exactly why I built my wooden one.
It does shoulder much different than the plastic ones.
Heavy though.. but that actually feels decent to have some weight and the balance seems better.

Still do not like it as much as a bolt rifle.
