Exactly the same rifle I was issued and like you hated the hell out of it. Accuracy was non existent with that 1:14 twist in the original issue. Bullets just tumbled out of the barrel.
After discharge would go into gun shops with ar's on the rack and comment how worthless they were.
Later in life after learning more about bullets, twists, and how they revolve around each other I started looking into the plastic guns.
They have to be one of the most versatile guns in existence currently, shooting everything from .17 to .450 big bores accurately.
The National 1000 yard matches at Camp Perry has been won with the modified AR platform more than once.
My most accurate rifle is a .243 WSSM in the AR platform with a 1:12 twist that puts bullets into the same cloverleaf hole every time if I do my part.
I’m not sure if you’re getting part of my post mixed up with RickN. I’ve never really hated the M-16. I just thought it was ugly. Cool but ugly. I think it was the carry handle. I’m quite familiar with of its early history and issues that it had. Like they were using the wrong bullets and powder for it. They took the chrome lining out of the barrel. Caused pitting in the chamber and caused cases to stick. There is a myriad of other things that I’m not thinking of at the moment. Basically the military took something that was good and messed it up. But as time has shown people have learned and it has turned into an outstanding platform. Very versatile and in many calibers like you stated.

Agree completely. Somebody, I can't point a finger at fawked up and specified a powder that was dirty and said that no cleaning kits were necessary. After a thousand rounds the chambers were like gum and failed to function. Many Americans died with a broke down rifle in their lap and a bcg in their hands during that war.

If I was going for a 22 I would look for an older 10/22.

My 10/22 in an M1 carbine stock.....

Interesting thread.

edited post. I read earlier about trying to get an AR built. I have an OSA lower and LPK that I'd offer, but after reading the rest of the thread, I think it's pretty apparent that an AR isn't in the cards. If things change, I will probably still have those parts available.
I have several parts I can donate, New Aero upper, New Diamond Back 16” Mid length barrel, New MLOK hand guard, new gas tube, and a muzzle device. All we would need is a .750 Low Pro gas block, BCG, and CH.

EDIT
@RickN you should really consider an AR as an option. Your friends here would step up an help put together a quality rifle, you could then keep the Ruger or sell it and invest in ammo, mags, etc. (or eventually a nice Mini 14)
I used to absolutely loathe the AR platform and had no interest in ever owning one. That is until BHO, startted spouting that I shouldn’t be allowed to. That got me to buy my first, and guess what, I LOVED IT. Now I have spent the last several years collecting, building, shooting and helping newbies get into the hobby as well. To me it is the PERFECT home defense weapon. Don’t get me wrong, I love wood and metal guns, especially the Mini 14, however I would not pick it as my HD weapon. Not because it is not a capable weapon, it is. But is is also heavy and cumbersome to manipulate in a residential setting. (IMHO) Either way best of luck in finding the right weapon and setup for you.

I don't get the loathing of a plastic stock to the point an AR won't even be considered. It's likely the perfect tool for what he wants. And that's what it is...a tool. It's not like you're gonna make love to the damn thing all day. It's a defensive rifle...it'll just sit in a corner or a cabinet all day until needed.

Personally I don't think Glock pistols have a soul like a really nice 1911. But they are an excellent choice for defense and carry so it was pretty easy to get over my biases against them because they perform so well. Not to mention they're pretty much at the cheapest price they've ever been.

If you were looking for a collector piece or something to soothe a sentimental longing, I'd understand. But for a gun that'll likely never be used for its intended purpose...nope...just don't get it.

Having said that, it's your choice, not mine. So happy hunting.
