My wife and I did the same thing 7 years ago when we found our lake house. We took out money and paid cash for it. We plan to retire there anyway and wanted to start enjoying it now without stress.

Greatest sense of freedom we had felt in a long time.
We used our 1 year emergency SHTF savings accumulated with my overtime pay. Live on the monthly pay and bank the overtime money.

We have been retired 20 years, and debt free longer than that. We are still finding advantages we hadn't thought of, of being debt free. The less income you need, the lower tax bracket you are in, we are taxed on SS based on our income. we pay income tax on from 20% to 80% of our SS income. If you can stay in the lower income bracket, that saves paying income tax on 60% of your SS income, and that is a lot!
