My avatar was my uncles unit that was there, 551st PIB, sent north from southern France (Dragoon) with no winter clothing, supposedly one general was quoted as saying "their paratroopers and supposed to be tough, get them up there", I'd have to go back through the book "Left Corner of my Heart" to see which general. Their Colonel was killed and the battalion so wiped out they disbanded it and spread the survivors out, my uncle was sent to the 82nd 504 PIR.
Edit to add: I found this among some of dad's papers, also found out he's buried in Hugo after a motorcycle wreck outside Ft Bragg in 1946.

High School friends dad was there. I never knew him as he committed suicide when my friend was young but left letters that were sent home, one of which saying he wished the Germans would come and kill him as he couldn't take the cold any longer.

I find it amazing that the GREATEST generation, as they are rightfully called, were ready to fight, and win, in combat and at home, We produced over twice as much war materail during WW2, AS ALL THE OTHER PERTICIPANTS ON ALL SIDES, COMBINED, the battle to prevent totalitarian Butchers from literally ruling the world! Look at why, they were equipped with the very tools, and attitude needed to do this. The great depression was very hard on everyone, but the lessons it taught a generation, were exactly what the greatest generation needed. Lessons like, toughness, fearlessness, determination, hard work, never give up attitude, make do with what you have, the ability to improvise, and think for themselves, and many others. I'm not sure what the newest generation is being prepared for, if anything, but far to many of them act like spoiled brats? Actually I have confidence in Americas youth, they just need a important purpose, challenge, to rise to!!
