"A *random company name here* worker who stopped an armed robbery by retrieving a weapon from his truck said he was fired by the company for violating their gun policy."

Just go ahead and boycott all companies at this point. All of them have a "no firearms" or "no weapons" policy.

Policy or not, the boycott becomes an issue when they fire someone for protecting there life and the life of other. I understand having a no gun policy, but you have to bend when such things as this happen

I'll play devils advocate here. What if the employee was a problem employee to begin with. Maybe he had been reprimanded prior to this for other behavior and he was on thin ice anyway.

Their company, their rules. They don't "have to bend", but it would be nice if they did. He intentionally put himself in harms way to save his fellow employee, and that is a good thing. Unfortunately companies will never see it this way. Generally speaking of course.

It's not the policy. It is their actions in enforcing the policy. Had they reprimanded the employee, thanked him for saving a coworkers life, then trained the staff on what to do in an emergency, they could have avoided this whole backlash. But they went ahead and fired the guy.

Side note: If he had never been trained by the company on what to do in that situation and was fired by his actions, he may have a case for wrongful termination.

That's because it's a zero tolerance intelligence policy. :(

Can anyone give a specific example where an honest person tried to protect themselves or others and it went wrong?

Only instances I could think of would be where excessive force was used after the perp was "stopped." Like the jewelry store guy that shot a guy, chased another, then came back and killed the first guy. Even that is relative to interpretation.....many think the clerk was a hero for removing a worthless scumbag from this planet.

You don't really hear to many stories about an armed citizen having their gun turned on them by someone already committing a criminal act.
