I think you'll be really happy with that Savage. I don't know if you have much experience with them, but accuracy is extremely good out of the box. .308 is my favorite caliber too 
biggest I've shot is 30/30, and 30/06. I figured if I was gonna spend the money, I'd get the .308. I'm really comfortable with the feel of the heavy barrel.
