Kinda seems like if the Devil sent a killer, that's just an easier way to get to Heaven quicker for those of strong faith. Not sure why security would be needed.

It's called a safety team because other than stopping a disgruntled individual, there are other things such as spills, fires, medical emergencies (especially for older generations) etc. that someone needs to be somewhat knowledgeable, ready, and somewhat "in charge" of dealing with whatever may happen or endanger guests at a church.
That could be anything like reporting or noting concerns without causing a panic or disrupting a service, properly cleaning, or showing a janitor to bodily fluids, cleaning a dirty drinking fountain, putting down a spill cone taping off a restroom unfit to use, johnny on the spot with a cellphone and camera, guy who shows people to a shelter in case of weather, escorting someone out, putting pressure on a wound now, and yes, the worst possible scenario. Pretty much someone to control the chaos so the pastor can give his sermon and not be a one man operation in case anything happens. Someone with gloves in their pocket.
A pastor that has to stop midway through a sermon to tell someone to get off their phone or be quiet would be disruptive the service. If there was a guy that could tap him on the shoulder and tell him hey turn it off for now, or ask what's going on quietly, then the service can continue with minimal interruptions, and maybe only one person gets upset.
Some people skills required.
If there are no good volunteers for a day or can't show up for whatever reason, having no one for safety that day would be preferable to having someone not really fit to carry or be empowered to do this sort of thing. The thought of someone good might be there is better than the thought of there is no one or all we could find is "this guy" and now he's armed. People should be vetted somewhat by someone that's a good judge of character. OSBI background checks are available for a small fee, 4473 would be done for a new, perhaps non-modified pistol if they will carry. Nobody is perfect, but as long as they aren't violent or a sex offender or someone you really wouldn't want in charge of this type of thing...

It's probably best to start the team off with an off-duty or ex-cop that knows a few things about the laws in the area, can vouch, and has training they can share. Can check with other churches that have this sort of thing and see how they put the idea across and how they do it.
God also puts us through trials and tribulations, tests our faith, lets us have emotions.

And this is exactly what me and my team are trying to accomplish. While we are geriatric in our numbers ( I'm the youngest at 54) I feel like we could get the job done when the SHTF.
I finally convinced two of my "younger" members to carry after an extended mental conditioning speech and a trip to the range. I don't think they have quite the same combat mindset as myself, but in a real scenario, they should do ok.
In all honesty, who knows what will happen? You can train, and train, and train some more, and it still may not turn out the way you had hoped.
