I have a separated shoulder and shooting a bow is painful for me. I can draw one back a couple of times but my shoulder doesn't allow as much practice as I need to be confident in my accuracy. Does anyone know what it takes to be able to hunt with a crossbow? The Wildlife Department website says they're allowed under certain circumstances.

I found this in the general regulations of the 2009-Spring 2010 hunting regulations. I copied it directly.
Crossbow Usage

Residents of Oklahoma who are 60 years of age or older and hunters who have a permanent disability to the extent that they cannot use a bow, as certified by a physician licensed to practice in Oklahoma or bordering state, may hunt with a crossbow.

A person who qualifies to hunt with a crossbow shall have in their possession while in the field written evidence of such certification signed by a physician or proof of age.

Crossbow: Minimum draw weight of 100 pounds and equipped with safety devices. Leverage gaining devices are permitted.

Bolts (arrows): Minimum of 14 inches in length and equipped with broadhead hunting type points not less than 7/8 inches wide.

Illegal Devices: Laser sights.

Mechanical Bow Draw Retention Device Usage

Definition: A mechanical device that allows a hunter to keep a bow at full or partial draw.

Residents of Oklahoma who are 60 years of age or older and hunters who have a permanent disability to the extent that they cannot use a bow, as certified by a physician licensed to practice in Oklahoma or bordering state, may hunt with a mechanical bow draw retention device.

A person who qualifies to hunt with such a device shall have in their possession while in the field written evidence of such certification signed by a physician or proof of age.

It must be a permanent disability.
The Dr can write permission on a perscription slip, or you can download the ODW version. Both are legal.
I like the perscription slip, as I reduced it on a copier, and laminated it.

First, look at this recent thread:

http://www.okshooters.com/forums/showthread.php?t=87347

Second, listen to what they said. Yep, see your doctor and ask for a note. Verify before the appt that it's something that the doctor can and will do if you set the appointment.

Third, everyone please take note that on Saturday, I put THIS:

(the Tac-10, that is)

into layaway at H&H Gun Range - can't wait to get it out, and REALLY can't wait for the fall!

I went with the Tac-10 as it's smaller and lighter (slightly), and with less draw length, will have limbs that last longer than the Tac-15. Will still do everything I need it to do, and then some.

That Tac-15 is a bas azz:D That 10 will do you well. Congrats on a nice crossbow.:D
Concerning the earlier posts, a comment was made that a new permit has to be re-issue'd every year. I'm not seeing in the regs where it says that is a requirment. If anybody knows where it is written, please let us know.
I've had mine for three seasons now, and so far, knock on wood(my head), nobody has questioned the date.

By the way, dennis, being smarter than me, has a good idea in reducing the note before laminating it. I just kept it full-sized; shoulda reduced it to fit in a wallet - doh!

dennis, if you go to H&H at a time when the archery counter is not too busy, they will let you shoot the Tac 15 right there - the one they have to play with has an aimpoint red dot on it. They let me shoot it and it's amazing how powerful/fast it is.

See ya at Big Mac in Oct

Uhh, hmmm, you sound pretty sure about that - you know something I don't know? Or more accurately, do you know someONE (in the wildlife dept) that I don't know?

400FPS? Thats moving. I'll be sure and stop in there. I have to go to OKC later this month for a training class, so making the rounds of all the gunshops is something I do after training is over.
