Foliage Update 11-03-2014 - The fall foliage season along the Talimena National Scenic Byway is showing light yellows and patches of autumn color on the still mostly green trees. Talimena State Park has a few trees beginning to change. The trees at Lake Wister State Park are showing oranges, bronze, yellows and a little red, and this weekend will be peak viewing. The Ouachita National Forest is showing a few yellows and reds popping out against the mostly green foliage that is on its way to peaking in about a week.
The start and the peak are pretty far apart. A good two weeks I'd say. Photosynthesis and moisture have more to do with the change than temperature I think.ok after the hard freeze this weekend colors are starting to show. by this weekend it should be really going strong. cedar creek said it is starting across the mountain south towards broken bow. i was from poteau to mcalester today and some of the mountains through that area are starting to show better. so from this coming weekend till thanksgiving should be the best times. that is if we don't get alot of strong wind and heavy hard rain fall.

YepLack of daylight (less daylight hours) shuts down the photosynthesis process, so there's reduced amounts of green chlorophyll that have been hiding the yellows, purples, reds, etc. that have been there in the leaves all along, just not able to be seen because of the more pronounced green.
Hardwoods dont drop most of their leave untill the end of winter/beginning of spring. What your seeing drop are the softwoods.this afternoon after ti had rained for awhile you could really see the colors on the side of mountains coming from mcalester south back to talihina. it's really getting pretty now. but the leaves are starting to fall pretty good. the rain has knocked a lot off today. when everything dries back out and the winds kick back in they are going to shed fast. after today the next 3 weeks should be great for touring the talimena drive. in fact we may drive over some of it this weekend ourselves.
