IMO, a classic along this line is Stephen King's "Salem's Lot". When I first read this, I was a tough-as-nails Sgt in the Marine Corps, and I had every light in the house on and my .45 in my lap...as ludicrous as the story may seem, it skeered the living crap out of me. What a talent to take a centuries old tale of vampires like this and turn it into something as visceral and powerful as King did.

Salem's Lot is my favorite vampire story. I had always hoped King would do another one.

Yeah, Salem's Lot rocked. The TV mini-series back in the early 80's literally scared me shitless! :yikes2: I had nightmares for weeks.

But I loved it! :w000t:

As for reading horror fiction, I too like a little Stephen King and Dean Koontz, but I'm more into James Patterson and the late Robert B. Parker.

I do appreciate the covers of all of Kim Harrison's novels however along with her clever titles. :rubhands:

Here's my problem...I like rather straight forward horror stories. In other words, I don't want to read about the heroic vampire or the "good" zombie. I like it when the good guys are good guys and the bad guys are bad guys.

I agree with you 100% on this. The nice vampires (who just can't help feeding on us humans) who are also very hip and sexy - make me laugh. They are more a reflection of cultural disaffection than good horror writing.

Do you like the H.P. Lovecraft Cthulu Mythos or the early Steven King stories inspired by H.P. Lovecraft?

I had a similar reaction - the story was well written with good sub-plots and deep ideas buried under the scary stuff.
