It’ll also grab the upper by the rail if equipped. Although, I’ve never used it in such a way. Well, you mentioned having the same one so this is useless info to yourself.

I've never had the need to use it to grip the rail either. Could never figure out why that feature is needed?

The one I have is like the geisle reaction rod but instead of clamping it in the vise you clamp the AR wrench in the vise and insert your torque wrench into the rod. But it also uses the locking lugs. Works great putting the nut on a standard upper though.

Do you use the one you have to attach the barrel also?

I bought this one specifically to change the handguard on my wife’s ar out which required a barrel nut change so I think the answer to your question is yes. I’ve only used it the one time.
