Lifetime Concealed Handgun License Bill Introduced in Oklahoma

Friday, February 05, 2010

On Tuesday, February 2, House Bill 3124 was introduced and referred to the House Public Safety Committee. No hearing has been scheduled.

Authored by State Representative Joe Dorman (D-65), HB3124 would create an optional lifetime concealed handgun license. If enacted into law, this legislation would become effective November 1, 2010 and the permit fee would be $500. However, Oklahomans would still be able to obtain a five-year permit for $100 or $85 for a renewal.

Indiana is currently the only state with an optional lifetime concealed carry permit and it is important that we express to our legislators that Oklahoma would like to be next.

Please contact the members of the House Public Safety Committee and respectfully urge them to support HB3124. Contact information can be found below.

Does this change the rule of losing your OK CC card the minute you move out of state? BTDT and not anxious to donate the money to OK again.

It'd suck to pay the $500 then get a job transfer a year later and lose the "lifetime" license.

I'm in favor of the bill, just to have the option. . .but I doubt I'd take advantage of the option. It'd take 20-25 years to pay for itself, and there's no telling what will happen in the next 25 years.

Would phased plasma rifles in the 40 watt range be legal for concealed carry?

My thoughts are, should they try and succeed in doing away with concealed carry by not issuing/renewing permits in the future an individual may be allowed to keep a lifetime permit until they die. But I don't have a crystal ball.

Sounds like a revenue generator more than anything. I like the concept, but why so expensive? $500? Really? It's not like a hunting license where you get something for your fees.

I guess it get backs to why should I have to pay to exercise a basic right?

DING! DING! DING!

It'll take 29 years to break even with the current $85.00 renewal, and right at 28 1/2 years to break even with a new issue and subsequent renewals. Personally, with my current license not due to expire until 2019, I'd have to live to be 102 for it to be worth it. It'll be worth it for all you young guys and gals about 55 and under.

It's a tax on the 2nd Amendment. No extra effort for the govt to issue a lifetime permit - why should they charge more?

I doubt it is truly "lifetime." Any excuse the legislature comes up with to suspend or cancel concealed carry and it will apply to lifetime license holders too.

Our legislators do not appear committed to gun rights. Vote them out if this is what they call improved gun rights.
