I think it goes like this:

Basic ticket is $2.

For an extra $1, you get the "multiplier" or "power play" or something like that.
If you match all the numbers, the grand prize (of $1.6 billion in this case) does NOT increase; you'd only get the $1.6 billion).
However, with the extra $1 you spent, all the lower prizes you can win (by matching only some of the numbers) are doubled.
Example: Instead of winning $1 million for matching all the numbers but one, you would get $2 million for spending that extra buck on the ticket.

BTW, according to the OK Lottery the odds of winning the grand prize in Powerball are 1 in 292,201,338.
Click on the tab for "odds and prizes" to see all the odds

So when you buy a ticket do you get some sort of extra something like a power play that doubles the prize?
Are there ways to win less than the jackpot like 4 numbers or something or do you just not win anything?

The power play can be from 2-10 depending on the jackpot size.

How Does PowerPlay Work?

If you purchase the PowerPlay option, the value of any prize you win for matching fewer than five balls will be multiplied by a randomly-drawn value between two and five. If the jackpot is worth less than $150 million, a 10x multiplier will be added to the mix.

For this drawing, and for the several before it, it would have been between 2 and 5.

My little syndicate has won several small prizes since this got above 500 million, but we always reinvest it, and keep putting the same in. That’s just how we play. YMMV

Hey, one of my daughters was a winner! $36…..but she confessed this morning that she had bought $60 worth of tickets. So the rest of the family were the actual winners, and likely will not let her forget for some time…
Just a roll of the dice. but if you can afford on occasion who cares.
