Swapping out an engine

Guys, I drive an old 90 Geo Prizm (Toyota Corolla). It's been broken into, hit from the side, etc. However, the engine is in great shape and runs like a top.

I have the opportunity to buy a 90 Prizm in good shape, but with a bad engine.

How much do you all suppose it would cost to have someone swap out the engine? I'm terribly allergic to car payments!

To pay someone... eh, depending on the car, it's not too bad. 1990 not sure if they'd have gotten away from all the vacuum hoses and what not in that car or not.

I did one myself in three weeks while on christmas break from college, using a Hayne's manual and elbow grease. Good times!

Mine? Heck no!

But that I4 aluminum short block I could lift on my own. I was surprised how light it was. To swap the trans from one block to the next, I unbolted it, lifted it, set it down on the new one.

Yea it's amazing how small those 4 cylinders are. Anyone ever see a bare aluminum honda motor? those things are tiny! Compared to my 4.0L Jeep and sbf of course


But an engine swap prob wouldn't be that hard, I've done it a bunch of times in my mustang. But I know there's a lot you have to pay attention to.

A shop will rape you and not even look back. A knowledgeable friend, beer, cherry picker and some time and its done.

This. I used to work at a garage. Most engine swaps were booked at 8-10 hours. Take that times the 60 - 80 bucks per hour, plus thier coolant / oil. It would be probably 800 at least.
