$499 + monitor = $600 to $700. On the other hand you won't save much money building one. The mechanics of building a PC are, as you pointed out, simple. But installing an operating system and drivers and then getting everything to work together can be maddening. Do you want it for web surfing, word processing and emailing or do you plan to use it for gaming? If you want it for high-end gaming $499 doesn't even come close to what you'll need. But a very inexpensive PC is fine for web surfing, word processing and email.
