I build because I do not end up with all the crapware that comes installed on factory PCs, I can build to meet my needs, and I can install the OS I want.

EDIT: As for the PC you linked, not bad. I always had good luck with HPs back when I was buying them and that has plenty of storage and memory.

www.pcdecrapifier.com is the first thing I run on every new computer. Followed by www.ninite.com

In that budget range with those activities just buy. My big gaming rig runs star wars the old republic when I game, XBMC dlna server, 2 linux virtual machines, and can rip a major blu-ray title to HD mp4 format in 30 minutes. If you want a rig that can do all that at once then build, but you're gonna need a bigger budget For what you want you won't realize any cost savings building.

Check out www.slickdeals.net If you want a basic fast PC. I'd recommend an intel i5 processor. If you want a gaming rig. At $500 you could build a PC and overclock the processor to get a good increase in performance. However, you should be able to get alot of bang for your buck at that price point at slickdeals. Here is my PC I built a couple years ago. I can help you choose components if you want to go the custom PC path.

If you are not looking for specific componets you will probably get a better deal buying one.

I used to build all of mine but lately the economics haven't justified building. I can usually find what I want in a package deal for less money.

This. Building a computer is the same as building an AR, You probably won't save any money, but you can get exactly what you want. You can also use it as a financing option.

For instance, I got an Asus motherboard with onboard video, a phenom || x6 processor, 4gb of DDR3, a case, and a pretty beefy power supply for around $300. I plan on adding more RAM and a better graphics card and more storage as time goes on and I have more disposable income.

At a $500 price point, you're in the realm of a low end budget PC. Going the custom route with a computer at that level is an up-hill-battle primarily due to the cost of the Operating system. $100 for a copy of Windows 7 is 20% of your budget, buying an OEM manufactured computer with the OS already installed (they probably only paid $5 to Microsoft for licensing) is a huge advantage.

$480 with free shipping

While it's Windows 8, make sure to install Classic Shell to restore your start button and menu.

That is definitely not as much computer as I would like. $500 is my budget just for the tower. I have a screen and a wifi mouse already.

Depending on what type of deal Sixseven can get me I may take you up on that. Thank you for the offer.
