Little boy was the 3rd, it was what is known as a "gun type" bomb as it shot a pellet of uranium into the many uranium mass to start the chain reaction. Fat Man the second bomb was an implosion bomb, as was the first test bomb. They knew the "gun type" would work after the uranium mass "reacted" in the basement of the University of Chicago, the unknown was the implosion type, which gave better yield.

I remember reading about the guy who was in charge of disaster control on Tinian. The Hiroshima bomb could be armed in flight, so he just had normal flightline safety procedures for that one.

The Nagasaki bomb, however, had to be armed before the plane took off, so when they asked him what his disaster plans were, he said he was going to take all of the safety equipment and crews down and set them up alongside the end of the runway so if something went wrong and there was a crash on takeoff he "wouldn't have to answer any damn fool questions."

Close but no cigar.

"Fat Man" (also known as Mark III) is the codename for the type of nuclear bomb that was detonated over the Japanese city of Nagasaki by the United States on 9 August 1945. It was the second of the only two nuclear weapons ever used in warfare, the first being Little Boy, and its detonation marked the third nuclear explosion in history.

The name Fat Man refers to the early design of the bomb because it had a wide, round shape. Fat Man was an implosion-type nuclear weapon with a solid plutonium core. The first of that type to be detonated was the Gadget in the Trinity nuclear test less than a month earlier on 16 July at the Alamogordo Bombing and Gunnery Range in New Mexico.
