Don't freak her out and all that.

Just take her to the gun range and teach her how to use a certain weapon.
Then, keep that weapon in a certain spot that she knows.
She will know what to do when/if she needs to.
Instinct of a mom to protect her kids will kick in.
There's the answer

It seems like she just doesn't take it seriously. Hey I was taught when I was a boy scout to always be prepared... just sayin

I have been made fun of multiple times by people who don't get it either. Who think I am some crazy whack-a-doo (they may be onto something.) They inevitibly call me "paranoid." At that I just say, "The only difference between being paranoid and being prepared is one incident. One thing happens and ya'll will say, 'Boy, it's lucky you had that gun!'..... 'NO. It's prepared I had that gun.'" I don't expect that to help you with your wife situation, just made me think of it.

My girlfriend is that way too though. She knows not to show up unannounced though. Text first. She doesn't get it, but there have been multiple times she has seen some shady character or been in an odd situation and later said she was really glad I was there and knowing I had a gun or wished I was there with my gun. She loves the protection, but not enough to do it herself. :anyone:

A couple of observations about women. I have been teaching women for some time and have seen some similar ideas.

1. Women are nesting creatures. They like their homes, spouses, children, and creature comforts of their nests. I think this materializes after a women has children.
2. Women usually do not like pain of any sort and of any degree. Men grow up in a different world where we don't admit we feel pain and don't shy away from it. A women will state they do not want to do with anything that will cause any degree of pain.
3. Women don't want to believe that we actually live in horribly dangerous culture. They simply cannot DEAL with it. I think some women are starting to realize this BUT to accept this reality and then do take action is a very depressing state for many women. It is much more comfortable to just deny it.
4. Women don't like 'open carry'. A women that will not have a problem with 'concealed carry' might have a huge problem with 'open carry'. Why? I believe that if the gun is out of sight it is out of mind. Once the state passed a law that 'open carry' is legal, i think many women now believe that we are living in a fallen society and they are scared.
5. Women want to be COMFORTABLE!!!!! Women judge their actions and govern the actions of their family and friends on whether these actions will be comfortable or not to them. I don't think being COMFORTABLE is a primary deal breaker for men.
6. Women and men are different and I am glad for it. In our culture, even though both the husband and wife may work, men still have the build in hunter gather, provider, PROTECTOR motivation in them. IMO, even though a woman may work full time, they are not wired in the same way.

But mainly, many women are in denial that their world and homes and lives could be in danger from the criminals. They just do not want to think in these terms. Whereas, men understand this and plan and take actions to protect themselves and loved ones.

SUGGESTION - the main thing that worked for me was the when i joined the NRA I started receiving the American Rifleman. In their monthly magazine, there is a page that has several short stories of people that were attacked and tells of their use of a handgun for protection. I just started reading these articles out loud at the diner table each month. And then I said, violence can happen to anyone, at anytime, anywhere. After a while my wife started to accept this reality. It does not matter of your social economic position in society, rich or poor, violence can happen to anyone.

My wife was the same way until she had a gun pointed at her at 33rd and broadway in Edmond with our twin daughters in the car. She thought it was a joke as well. She is more on the ball then me when it comes to shooting!! Just explain it to her and have her watch the news. My wife now carries daily.

I have students making $250,000, $500,000, $20,000 and $55,000 and $75,000 and all ranges of income annually tell me that the reason for the training is that they now feel it is the right thing to do.

My first choice of a home defense weapon for a woman who doesn't take shooting seriously or is intimidated by guns would be a .410 pump shotgun. Almost no recoil and almost dummy proof to use. Load it up with heavy bird shot.

Never ever recomend a shotgun with bird shot, especially a pump gun for home defense.

I've done extensive tests, real time, about penetration through heavy clothing, safety glasses, etc, at home defense ranges, and posted pics on this site.
Most of the major trainers in HD do not advocate the pump gun either. If one is injured, or shot in one arm/hand/wrist, your screwed with a pump gun in most cases.
There is a training regimin to cock a pump gun while having a useless limb, but in a bad situation, it takes too much time, and 99.999% of folks don't know how to do it effectively.

My wife was the same way about a year and half ago. This is what worked for me:

I first introduced her to guns (she had never been around them having lived in NJ) after we moved here back in June 2011. After a few weeks of it being around I took her to the range. She shot it a few times and then wanted to leave after 10 mins or so. A few weeks later I just started reading her stories of new events locally every so often. Not several in one day but maybe 1 or 2 a week or just bring up something I had heard on the new even though it might have been 10 years old. Then I found this youtube channel and started to watch them when she was around. She is always noisy so after a few videos she would over hear and get involved. These videos are very down to earth.

(any with Crimestrike in title)

As this was going on I was taking many classes at carrylegal and became friends with a few of the instructors on facebook. Although woman may not seem to pay attention to what we do they do in their own way. During this time she would go to the range and we would stay longer and longer. About 6-8 months into this she wanted her own gun with a little "you should just have one at home when I'm not around" push from me. After each one of my classes she would ask questions or I would just offer info that happened.

I finally took her to her CCW class and told her "I know you don't want to carry and Im ok with that but this class offers basic info and it will be fun.". I even went with her so she wasn't lonely. After meeting Jeremiah and Jeremy at carrylegal they, which they always do with any clients, treated her with care. They knew her stance on personal protection and asked her questions that she had no answer for. Made her think in a passive way. After the class was over she wanted to take their self defense class so we both signed up.

I think it takes time, passive behavior on your part and have someone of authority to make them think.

Good luck.
