Is it for range work, carry, home defense etc? I couldn't tell if you were looking for something already customized, or one to "fix up" yourself.

As far as RI vs. Taurus, I would say the RI is generally (at least the ones I've seen locally) closer to GI spec, and pretty darn basic. I imagine it would be a good platform to build off of. The Taurus will have more goodies out of the box, but will cost close to your budget.

You might be able to find a Kimber in that price range. A little higher end, but pretty darn nice (I am biased; have a couple....or I did before that "unfortunate boating accident").

Oh, and that Gunsite Edition S&W is a smoking hot deal. If I wasn't busted....

It depends which RIA you get. RIA has GI, Compact, Tactical etc...
There's not really very much "love" around this board for the Taurus 1911. Take it or leave it, but it's worth considering before you spend the money.
If you're considering either RIA or Taurus, take a look at the thread comparing the 2 posted earlier in this thread.

Also, I agree, Penis' S&W is a realy nice pistol in your $ range.

im looking to fix up myself (my touch:rolleyes2) thats why im not gona put anymore:nono1: $$$ in it than that...

If that's the case, look at the RI or possibly even better, a Springfield GI.

I have never seen any that were not the basic GI model, except on the interwebs....I've heard they exist, but I'm not really sure....kinda like Sasquatch.

Ok, I'm kidding a bit.....maybe....
