Black bear. It is fairly common for them to check out hunters in stands. Especially if hunting over bait and the hunter has bait scent on him from handling bait.

Exactly. First bear I ever saw was in this situation. He came up from directly behind me and I never noticed till I felt the tree shake. When I looked down, he climbed to about a foot or two below my platform and stared at me for a few seconds and then got back down. The guide had told me to expect this behavior so I was not really scared. He said he had had some bears climb up the tree and get above the hunter and if that happened...get ready, because a really big bear is coming in and the one above you is scared of it.
