Is Dr. Barry Greyson still doing 1911 work? He fixed up the one I shot and it seemed to be totally reliable after he worked his magic.

I had a .40 and a 9. Both are great guns but a compact 1911 is more versatile (my opinion only) and can be had for quite a bit less money.

I had a 9 and a .40 back in 2011. I experienced what Defcon Shooter is describing. I never trusted the pistols after that. The 9 went back to Springfield and they said they fixed the problem. The first primer would plug the firing pin hole on the face of the slide and not allow the next round to fire. See the photo below. Also, they were just too pretty and too much money to mess up. In my opinion a compact 1911 is more versatile.

More versatile in what way, may I ask? I’m only considering this gun because it supposedly was designed around the 9mm cartridge. I have only had prior experience with .45 1911’s. Have never owned a 3 1/2” 1911, but from what I’ve heard the have reliability issues, the same has been said of 9mm 1911’s. I’m really kind of at a loss here......

Perhaps versatile isn't the best choice of words. Parts and accessories for 1911s may be interchangeable where most everything for the EMP is likely proprietary. The officer's model 1911 when it first came out in .45 had reliability issues. I owned a Colt officer's model from the '80s and never had an issue with it. I sold it because of the weight. I have had several Kimbers 3" compacts and now own a Colt Defender. I have had zero issues with any of them. I have never owned a 9 mm 1911 so cannot speak to those.

If you are familiar and comfortable with the 1911 platform you will undoubtedly enjoy the EMP. You might check a couple of the ranges as you may be able to rent one to try before you buy.

I have a Colt Defender that eats anything I feed it with nary an issue. It's probably my favorite handgun in my collection.

Best of luck with your decision!

If you want the problem to manifest run 20 rounds or so of high performance defensive ammo through it. They run great on standard ball. Higher pressure over comes the low mass firing pin.

Never had an issue with mine either. When I carry guns I run various types of SD ammo through it. HST, Old Hydroshok, GD, Sabre, etc. If I would've had any problems, I never would've carried it.

Well perhaps your unit was not purchased new? Springfield will update for free. However the up date makes it not Kalifornia legal. I always do my own update using wilson 38 super steel firing pin kit. Requires turning down the pin to match the OEM taper however. Quick web search shows the extent of the issue is pretty prevelant.
