It would not surprise me in the least to discover that such contingency plans already exist.

Yeah and you can bet if they do exist they aren't for you and I that's for sure!

DSA/dnc IS the enemy. Want proof, just look at California and watch Virginia.

Here's another thought: If it's big enough to cause TEOTWAWKI, it'll be big enough to spot way long before a week. Probably close to a year, unless it is moving along at a significant fraction of the speed of light. A humongous solar flair, on the other hand ...

Subs and some of the under ground bunkers might survive if far enough away from the impact site. Would need years worth of supplies though.

The underground bunker idea make me think about the line from the USAF General (George C. Scott) in the movie "Dr. Strangelove," where they are talking about having people underground to survive the coming nuclear holocaust, and he's worried about a "mineshaft gap" between the capabilities of the U.S. and the Soviets.

*** This is kind of a rhetorical comment and not meant as an insult to Constitution Cowboy. ***

Even if the U.S. Gov knew about it a year in advance, do they have anybody smart enough and who could cut through enough red tape to launch anything that would actually HIT the damn asteroid and take it out?

Edited to add, speaking of Dr. Strangelove, this scenario ^^^ reminds me of the U.S. President telling everybody that we can't have any fighting in here, it's the war room...

Not really. Even though they do not talk about it much, they only have a small portion of near earth objects identified and charted. There have been times when a week's warning is good, a month is great.

Yep. In the grand scheme of things, it doesn't have to be all that big to cause a lot of damage, and there are a heck of a lot of them out there in an incredibly huge volume of space. It doesn't help that they're essentially black objects moving against a black background.
