I probably have 4-5x as many registered to me than I actually own. I'd like (almost) every thing I own to fill a particular gap and to work well very well (for me). I don't want a bunch of variants of things that are essentially the same, generally. For example, after putting in enough time to realize I prefer the striker-fire function of the P10C, my P07 is perpetually "for sale". I don't want six 223 rifles that are essentially the same, or five mid-size 9mm handguns (although, along the lines of "filling gaps"... I'm fine with the idea of say one 9mm that is ultra carry capable, one that is larger but carryable, and one that is raced out simply for fun).

I agree with your thinking, but I don't exactly follow it, or do I?

5 Blackhawks, Cowboy Action shooting, 5 different calibers.
3 Single Six, a 3 screw, a New Model, a New Model stainless. Grandsons to leave them to.
3 SxS, 12, 20, .410, different Makes.
6 lever guns, different Make, different caliber.
1 DA
My only true duplicate is Colt ACE. I bought one and the other was Dad's. They will go to 2 oldest grandsons.

I have never regretted any sale / trade.

We all have our justifications.

Hah! Short answer is all of the above at different times for different reasons over the years.
Getting older has made me rethink my battery as I phase out of certain activities and as I change physically.
Recoil and certain medications do not mix along with certain carry positions.
Been trying to add/subtract to accommodate that fact of life.
Plus just getting some things I have wanted for a while!

I've still never sold or traded one and I don't see myself doing so anytime soon. I just know I'd regret it eventually. Plus, a good amount of my guns were passed down from family.

When I sell it's either because I'm out of space, bored with it, or I had to buy some gun I didn't want in a lot with a gun I did want.

20 years ago in the era of the $50-100 milsurp rifle, most of us had 10-20 rifles stacked in a corner that we'd only shot once or twice. Lots of those got sold.

Secret bunker in an undisclosed location.
25+ years ago I sold a few because we needed the money. Still miss a couple of them.

Last gun I sold was back in December. A Henry .45-70 lever gun. The gun shot great, I really liked it. But a few years ago I managed to tear up both my shoulders, again. Right shoulder will never be "right" again. Left shoulder is pretty good. I was actually afraid to shoot the big Henry with anything approaching full power loads. I'm pretty sure it would have just disassembled what remains of the right shoulder. Sure I could download for plinking rounds for it but for that kind of stuff the 1874 Sharps is more fun.
I sold it to a nephew for a good price and he was grinning ear to ear when he left, even his wife seemed happy about it.
I replaced it with my new Ruger American RF.

Just yesterday I took a Bersa Thunder 9mm Compact to the Evil Pawn Shop,,,
I bought the pistol on a whim 8 1/2 years ago with 200 rounds of ammo.

I fired all the ammo in two range trips,,,
And haven't touched the gun since.

The Evil Pawn Shop Guy gave me a decent "quick sell price" for it.

That's kinda weird in a way for me,,,
It pistol fit my hand perfectly,,,
And I hit fairly well with it.

But for some reason it never became a favorite shooter.

Since I've retired I've sorta settled on just shooting a few of my guns,,,
I'll probably start selling/gifting off more this year.

At my age it's time to start paring down the numbers a bit,,,
I'd rather gift them now and have that enjoyment,,,
Than leave them bequeathed in my will.

Two years ago I gave each of my friends three sons a .22 rifle from my cabinet,,,
I get just as much enjoyment out of glancing on the picture of them,,,
Than I did owning them and having the rifles sit in my cabinet.

I own 63 fiery-arms right now,,,
I'll probably get it down to 12-15 keepers.
