Extra Virgin Olive Oil is a good addition to diets that include red meat. The catch is if you cook with it, the cholesterol benefits get burned away. I really dislike any form of oily salad dressing which is how most people include it in their diet. I have a shot glass next to a box of domestically sourced EVOO. Splash of lime juice on the top and I get my 2T dose every day right before I eat lunch. When I started my wellness plan with a mens health specialist, I was on the verge of being prescribed statins in my 30s. She really prefers to try lifestyle adjustments first and meds if necessary after that.

Red meat is absolutelyyyy fine. Arterial cholesterol buildup is NOT caused by dietary cholesterol (you NEED dietary cholesterol for the formation of every hormone in your body). It is caused by systemic inflammation which is a result of sugar, refined carbohydrates, and *seed oils*.

That sounds really plausible until you realize that humans developed arterial buildup way before we started consuming refined sugar, refined carbs, and seed oils.

It's still plausible - these are just some of the causes of inflammation, which is gonna get you more cholesterol.

I'd still say our sedentary lifestyles coupled with overeating accounts for most heart disease.

A1C numbers are a better predictor of a heart event, as well as diabetes.

Just like our gluttony for cheap goods and foods give us Chinese crap and McGreaseburgers with lousy service, so also does it give us more miserable lives as we age.

My glucose is at 95 and my A1C was 5.6% last year, both numbers within limits. None of my blood tests are out of whack, all are pretty good (not perfect) so that's a big part of my hesitation on taking a prescription.

Been on Simvastatin and Fish Oil for years with no problems or side affects.

During typical monitoring while getting my second Cataract taken care of on Wednesday, Dr noticed a problem and sent me to the VA Express Care (i.e. Urgent Care) for an EKG, then to the ER for further testing. Discharged with a diagnose of Atrial Fibrillation and sent home with two new meds (a beta blocker called Apixaban to control heart rhythm and Metroprolol Tartrate to lower blood pressure) and a soon visit with a cardiologist.

No problems noted during my annual physical just 3 months before and during my first Cataract surgery 2 months ago, so I guess things can change really fast sometimes. Right now I'm just trying to recover from the surgery and digest everything that's going on in my life and in my country.

I've recently been prescribed Lipitor due to an arterial blockage in the smaller artery behind my heart (40-50% blocked). The two larger arteries are clear. The Lipitor is to help with stopping anymore of a blockage. The doc prescribed it without any discussion on diet or exercise, just take a pill. I like red meat.

I have yet to take the meds due to side effect concerns on my part as well as I've got no other health issues going on.
Cholesterol - 163
HDL - 41
LDL - 109
5'11", around 170# and 59 yrs old.

If anyone is comfortable saying, are you taking Lipitor and have you had any side effect issues?
Thanks.
Actually if your total cholesterol is below 250 your good, some of the new scales say 200 but I suspect they are pushing pills. Looks like your HDL to LDL ratio is OK (your HDL should be approx 1/3rd of your LDL) but Im only going off what my Dr's have shown and told me. I took Pravastatin for years and ended up with so little total cholesterol <100 total, so low they couldnt measure my HDL. My joints became dry and I ended up with a devastating spinal cord injuries and my entire left leg went into a cramp and my right foot dropped! I had tried to stay fit my entire life but a Dr. prescribed the Pravastatin when I was in my Fourty's and was on the road and lived out of my pickup for days on end sometimes. I quit taking the Statin after researching it and found out that your are 70X times more likely to have what happened to me happen than if you dont take Statins. Nobody ever mentioned that not one time in 15 years of taking it. Now after 15 yrs of not taking any cholesterol pills and watching my diet better and probably the not consuming as many ribeyes and massive quantities of beer very often my cholesterol has been fine. Ive had to have 5 lumber L4,L5, S1, L3 and have two disk in my neck that need repaired. My L5 and S1 have been worked on twice. Most of these cholesterol meds are pretty rough on the liver, so be sure to keep a eye on the liver function blood work.

My biggest problem is being hypoglycemic.

My cholesterol numbers are 3LDL to 1HDL, with a total around 220 without meds. When I was on atorvastatin, LDL was under 100 and HDL was way too low. Since I quit taking the atorvastatin, I feel much more energetic, have some sex drive where I had none on the statin, and have had little trouble controlling my weight. I take CoQ-10 as well to help by cells absorb the goodies that the LDL brings around.

There is no one set of numbers that works for everyone.

I do have a lot of arterial sclerosis throughout by body, but I believe it hasn't gotten any worse in the last several years.

It started for me when I was in my 40's, and had my first heart attack at 49, with triple bypass at 50. I believe I inherited my plumbing woes from my folks, too much smoking, and a lot of stress.

I eat nothing artificial, no MSG, nothing diet, and I do have 3 home cooked meals a day. That has made a lot of difference for me. My biggest meal is breakfast, a light lunch, and supper consists of dessert. It's mostly what I crave and it satisfies me. I feel no urge to overeat.

Now, if I could only find a way to shrink my prostate ... :anyone:
