Trying to learn from the situation since I sit in church many Sundays thinking about the possibility of this happening. Would the first guy who was standing and attempting to draw have stood a better chance had he attempted to draw while seated? Idk. I’ve thought about it since long before this happened and have decided that if possible I will have my weapon ready when I stand up and draw attention. I hope I don’t sound rude second guessing what the guy did and maybe it wouldn’t have mattered but I believe there may always be something to learn.
I commend you for trying to learn from it. This is something we rarely get. Decent video. More will come out.
It looks like he was trying to draw from a small of back holster or from a rear pocket. That is a red flag for me to start with. His movements made it easy for the perp to react.
Yes, a stealth draw would have been better, but difficult from his apparent carry position. There was 3.2 seconds from the shotgun presentation to the perp firing.
Carry position choice, holster selection, and shooter training could have put a shot on the perp in well under 2.5 seconds. But 95% of Concealed Carriers can do it. I’ve worked with several that put in done time that can. The key is knowing what you can and cannot do. I know several peers that can pull that shot off in sub 1 second seated from an appendix position.
I’ll be frank. I cringe when I see many posts on this forum about weapon, belt and holster choice. Each minor thing can take tenths of a second off of the draw. Things that make that action survivable. And the one that took the second blast likely would have survived.
I’m waiting to hear more. I think the perp shot himself or was hit by another round. Not enough evidence from the video, but that was 3 distinct sounds and I don’t believe the third was a pistol. Sound recorded can be misleading.
