The magnification starts at 3X? That would be a dealbreaker for me if I couldn’t get 1X. Maybe why it’s so cheap now?

No, that does not to appear to be the case per the product description. Appears 3x, 4x and 5x are optional capabilities.

The first number, in this case a “5” is the power. So the one they are selling is a 5x.
