It's not some secret conspiracy to cover for politicians... tons of people really do get hysterically emotionally affected by stories like this. The news media thrive on stuff like this.

Here is the issue. Lions are not protected outside of that reserve that has no fence. They are not endangered. Elephants are not endangered in that area either. Cecil left that preserve of his own accord to hunt for meat. He found some that had been left according to the article you posted. Unfortunately for Cecil, he got shot with a bow. Bpws can be just as deadly as a rifle if they are shot accurately, and night time is tough, but doable. Easily doable with the right equipment, and I'll bet he had it, just had a hiccup and didn't get it right. Rifle hunters have hiccups too.

Lion, cheetah, Leopard, and other cats are hunted at night. They are nocturnal hunters. In the day they sleep for the most part unless are really hungry.
Both present dangers to local tribes by lions killing their livestock, and at times people. Elephants in this country and others in Africa are actually over populated and destroy peoples farms, and gardens. They don't have grocery stores there, so the loss of a garden, livestock or farm land means loss of income and potentially loss of human life by starvation.

But the media keeps portraying this as a horrific event. In the link you provided, it said 4 other collared lions where shot in that same area. Where in the hell was the media then?? Where was the outrage and the call for legislation in the US that has an effect in another countries sovereign rights about hunting?

Why didn't Delta Airlines have an outrage over the other collared lions and enact new shipping directives for game trophy's? They have flown thousands of them back to the US. What was different about this one? Is it because the lion had a name?

I can tell you why, the media is in the process of dumbing down the new younger generations that are coming up with this garbage like shooting Cecil the lion. Lions have been shot for trophy's for well over a century. Not only to they get to hang the head on their wall, they have potentially saved human lives, and by paying the fees like $50,000, they contribute to the conservationist that are protecting endangered specie. The corrupt government isn't worried about Cecil, Mugambo only wants to seize land. He could give a flying flip about Cecil. Did you read the response about what he had for dinner on his birthday? If not, you might want to go back and read more of this thread.

If it weren't for hunters and hunting that contribute to these preserves by their hunting fees, there would be a whole lot more animals on the endangered specie list if not extinct.

As stated earlier, PETA and none of the save the whale, or save the planet groups will send one dime to Africa to support conservation.
Hunters do it.

Friday when I was in Ft. Worth picking up the Bronco, the guy I was buying it from is part owner in a hunting outfit in South Africa. His house had several trophies in it, only one taken by himself, the rest taken by his daughters who were in middle school! He even showed me his pic with a male lion the trip before last lol :)

Those that think their meat comes from safeway might not want to watch this video. A hunter killed this rogue elephant that was causing problems by destroying crops.
The village reduced it to bones for the fresh meat. This is how these people survive in Africa's remote regions.

As Okbassin said one cannot reason with ignorance ah sooooooooooo true on this subject. Those who spread the poison of rationalizing the killing of lions, elephants, and rhinos truly are more than misinformed. The numbers of these species have dropped off the charts in the last 60 yrs. Lions alone have gone down to less than 25000 form times that. Elephants well they ARE on the endangered list contrary to posts here. Rhinos well less that 250 left in Africa period. So all you who think it is ok to continue the loss of these beautiful animals go ahead and do under the guise of meat for the natives, and Rogue Animals that need killing because the destroy crops. That foolish statement sounds like Americans killing a feral hog for the in fact true statement of such. Only problem is there are 4 million or so feral hogs and less than 1000 elephants. What a sick and perverted way to "make it ok". Watch however as the loss of this lion will heighten the outcry to finally stop Americans from pulling such an gregarious acts in the future without paying a far more steep price than $50000 and a lost arrow. Lets revisit this in a yr or two and see if those from the corner if this insidious DR and his god given right to continue such hunts has a much different face to it. The American people will change this. The vocal minority of kill at all cost will be very unhappy too.

Im through with this so you guys go ahead and play in your sand box or better continue to stand on it. Right is on the side of animals in this case and it will prevail.

Oh and God gave us the right to domain over all creatures. He did not give us the right to their extinction.

Not sure if this has been figured into the equation. Africa has been fairly droughty. Of late. So not sure what their country can sustain critter wise. I would think keeping the numbers down by hunting. Would be better than letting them starve. To die and rot on the ground. I read a book a few years ago. The Man Eaters of Tsavo. Where two male lions killed several people building a railroad. This happened in 1898. Movie was made about this incident. The Ghost and the Darkness. Good movie. Lions in the wild are just not nice and cuddly.

This leader is obviously an idiot if what the above post contains is accurate!!!! That said we don't need to contribute to such idiots ideas by contributing to his kitty by spending money on controlled hunts that take such a Pretoria of animals, many of which are endangered. I am personally against "trophy hunts" outside the US. Many of these things take animals that may very well no longer be with us in another generation. Who put us in charge of participating in the extinction of animals by hunting them so one can hang it on a wall? To me if one believes in the word of God bringing about extinction by choice for one's pleasure is not what His word is about.
A very interesting--if somewhat aged--thread on the topic:

Those lions are mounted and on display at a museum in Chicago.
