The powers at be are majority Republican citizens and their elected majority Republican representatives, who do not value education enough to prioritize funding for teachers.

Horse crap. For years and years the dimwits were the majority in this state and I always thought it would be that way. Same problems then, wasn't any different at all. Quit being partisan, I know it's fun and all but it's not reality.

I think you made the right choice with your vote. I just wish you teachers would break out the torches and pitchforks and start demanding that the waste of school funding cease. It's been illustrated in this very thread. If it ceased you guys could be paid quite well. And thank you for what you do!

They whine way too much already!!! It's in the news every 5 mins!! For god's sake they only work 9 months out of the year!! and my brother in law's cousin is a teacher and she sits at the pool all day!!

Thank you sir. I appreciate that. You are also correct about school spending waste...

Memories run short in this thread.
Trump caused it in a conspiracy with the russians!

Just to add to the under worked, adequately paid teacher discussion -- Waste? It probably exist in some districts but I know of administrators that clean restrooms and wash dishes in the cafeteria to save money. The accounting for the money spent is very strictly audited and requires very strict rules.
Also, Oklahoma has reduced funding to public education by $1 Billion dollars over the last decade. Oklahoma subsidizes tuition for education majors from Texas attending OK universities. They pay in state tuition then return to Texas to work. I know this because I've supervised several of them and filled out several reference checks from Texas schools over the last 6 years including several in the last couple of days.

Here's a little reading if you would like to be better informed

Do teachers receive paid medical insurance and retirement in addition to their salaries?
Yes, but if you choose not to take the insurance there is a stipend paid of around $190. The employees insurance may be paid but to insure the rest of the family on the state program it is EXPENSIVE.
Retirement is paid by the district and it goes into a coffer then paid out based on a formula which eludes me at the moment.

Over Christmas break I turned down a job making 75K a year. It had a 30 day vacation package. My future son in-law has a BA and makes 90K a year with a 30 day vacation package. I really think we should be making around 50K year topping out about 60K a year. I do not think anyone is saying we should make a comparable annual salary to someone with the same level of education, but we should get the low end of per month worked. Some of these folks think we should get minimum wage. The least they could do is give our step increases, which we are not getting.

Pokin, does your district have a bargaining group?

We have waste, but I think it is wasted when attempting to meet state and federal mandates, which have little to do with education for the benefit of our state.
