Maiden voyage on the UDS

Dabbled with the offset smoker for awhile and wanted to try something I didn't have to tend as much. A buddy of mine introduced me to the Ugly Drum Smoker and got one built for about $25. Set the temp at 225 and didn't touch it once for 4 hours. Pretty pleased with the first attempt.

Hot dang, for 25 bucks that pretty good. Do tell. You got a how-to or bill of materials or anything like that available?

I learned a bunch from this thread http://www.bbq-brethren.com/forum/showthread.php?t=23436 it'll teach you everything you need to know. A google search for ugly drum smoker will also show various ways of building one. The trick for me was finding a food grade barrel.

Where did you find your barrel?

Found a guy on craigslist that always has various barrels in stock. He said he sells about 200 a week out of his house. He had at least 75 food grade barrels when I was there. http://oklahomacity.craigslist.org/for/2494179677.html Good price at $12.50. Also scored a free webber grill grate from a friend, nuts and bolts from around the house. Bought the long turkey thermometer and the valve and my buddy made the fire basket for me.
